Selection of materials and finish should be in tune with the mood of the meeting area and the surrounding scheme: darker, richer solid timber and veneers, sometimes with glass inserts, for more traditional interiors; or lacquered MDF or laminates, and chromed aluminium, for example, for sleeker more contemporary spaces.

The choice of shape is important: the dynamics of a meeting will be different at a long rectangular or barrel-shaped table, than in a circular or U-shaped configuration.

Training and conference areas often require flexibility: folding, collapsible or modular tables can be configured to meet changing requirements, and moved out of the way or stored when not in use.

Boardroom tables tend to be larger, permanent installations that are usually handmade to order in solid wood.
