Challenge

Maris Interiors approached Massey & Harris with the idea of installing a slide to add a wow-factor to YouGov's new offices. The slide was to run from the ground floor down to the basement level.

Originally looking for a sweeping curve coming back on itself, a site visit found that the space had been overestimated and that this would not be possible, while keeping the slide unit safe, exciting and within the requirements of BS EN 1176.

Massey & Harris was given a very small window in which to build the slide, and as an entirely bespoke unit, this was all the more prevalent in progressing the project forward.

Solution

By taking accurate measurements with a laser on site, our designers were able to accurately recreate the immediate environment in 3D, and begin working on a viable solution for the slide.  The consequent unit was given a snaking double-bend design that allowed it to fit snugly between the two floor support columns, but remain a much more exhilirating ride than a straight tunnel.

By utilising, and making the very most of the Solidworks CAD package we were able to quickly draft the design and produce 3D renderings and drawings for approval by the contractors.  

Once the design had been signed off the 3D model was converted into 22 profiles that were precision laser cut ready for fabrication. As the installation deadline became tighter we adapted our manufacturing workflow to meet the demand and got the slide in on time.

Outcome

As the site was accurately surveyed, and sophisticated manufacturing technologies were used, the slide dropped into position exactly as expected.

The bright red powder-coated finish provides a striking contrast with the white office interior, and all polished stainless fixings and supports give the unit touches of class and value. 

YouGov has now joined the innovative band of companies who are investing heavily in their workspaces to increase staff retention and happiness, generating overall gains in productivity. The new slide is a small part of this but will certainly be a huge talking point, both in the office and out.
