Challenge

Benchmark was contacted by 2020 Projects to help with the refurbishment of the Fox Café Bar at Falmouth University.

The brief was to create circular tables to surround potted trees, with benches to seat up to 8 people. With the space often being used for a variety of events, all the items needed to be freestanding to allow easy removal when required.

Solution

With this in mind, plus a tight budget, Benchmark decided that a bespoke solution would be the best option.

316 stainless steel tube provided the framework for both the benches and tables, as it enabled the production of the simple curves that formed a pleasingly protective edge to the timber slats. Through the efficient use of these materials, and carefully designed components, Benchmark was able to create the desired products on time and within budget.

Although the furniture was situated in an internal area FSC iroko slats were selected as this class of timber is very stable and not prone to splits. The furniture was then finished with an interior grade oil to offer a long-lasting protective coating at against tea and coffee stains.

Outcome

The finished products allow for great flexibility yet retains an aesthetic design that will last for years to come.
