Many UK installations, especially in the domestic sector, have wall sockets and switches that fit into mounting boxes as defined in BS 4662:2006. However, an increasing choice and sophistication is seen in the design of electrical installation accessories.

Switches and power sockets can be supplied in contemporary or traditional designs to fit in with the decor. Materials and finishes can be chosen to co-ordinate with other fittings such as door knobs and handles.

Wall switches come in rocker , flick-switch, dolly and dimmer types, whilst card switches can be used in hotels. For an unobtrusive look, switches and sockets can be flush-fitted with concealed fixings, whilst acrylic backplates allow the wallpaper or paint to be seen.

Desktop modules are used in offices to take power and data cables up to the user's level.

Special sockets and switches are used in wet or high-risk locations such as bathrooms, swimming pools and industrial environments.
