Context

Jessheim High School in Akershus, Norway, houses 1500 students and 240 staff. As well as the classroom areas, the school has a large canteen, an open amphitheatre, a two-storey library with atrium space, creative seating areas, social zones and spontaneous meeting spaces.

Challenge

The school was built with the goal of providing a facility for the future, using sustainable building materials and energy-saving features. A strong emphasis was also placed on creating a high-quality interior environment using materials and colours for the furniture and surfaces which promoted a welcoming, friendly environment with easy navigation for visitors, students and staff.

Another important goal was to achive good indoor air quality.

Solution

Formica surfaces were specified for all the surfaces on student lockers, fronts, the insides of cabinets, library shelves, tabletops, tables, seating, benches, countertops, and in the atrium and the dividing walls in the canteen. The material was chosen for its high level of resilience, hygienic qualities and the wide range of colours that are available in the Formica® Collection range.

The school's interior presents an interplay between function, colour and material, with different colours helping to underline the function of different areas and assisting in navigation through the building.

Formica® laminates were also chosen for their GREENGUARD accreditation - a certification awarded in recognition of the material's low chemical and particle emissions, which helps ensure a healthy air quality in homes, schools and offices.

Testimonial

Interior designer, Anette Sand, said: "We have chosen to exclusively use laminate from the Formica Collection Colors for all surfaces on student lockers, fronts and insides of cabinets, the library shelving units, table tops, the bespoke countertops, benches, the tables and seating in the atrium, and the dividing walls in the canteen. We also used Formica® Compact in some places, such as for the high tables in the canteen and staff room. We have worked with other suppliers and surface materials in the past but now we only specify Formica as it’s the only product we know delivers the level of quality, durability and range that we require."
