Quantum Flooring provides two models of dementia-friendly flooring transitions: QTP38R and QTP38T.
There are several key points to consider in dementia friendly-design when it comes to selecting the right flooring transition profile and LRV colour. Tonal contrast is critical for materials to be seen against each other.
Contrast can be perceived where there is 15° of LRV or more between adjacent materials. For example both the Dementia Services Development Centre (DSDC) and BS8300:2:2018 recommend a difference of 30° of LRV between critical surfaces such as on stairs. For flooring and flooring transitions:
adjoining flooring should be tonally similar to reduce the risk of trips, slips and falls
flooring LRV’s should be within 10° of LRV
Transition strips should match the tones of both surfaces with an ideal difference of 3° of LRV step difference.
