Background

Designing to facilitate effective hand decontamination.

Considering the march of antibiotic resistance, rightly described as a global threat that equals climate change in terms of its seriousness, the need to break the chain of infection through effective hand decontamination becomes ever more important.

In spite of this, hand hygiene compliance - its frequency and technique - in the healthcare environment remains woefully inadequate.

This seminar raises the question what are the barriers, or disincentives, to achieving effective hand hygiene compliance, and how can engineering help?

Who should attend

This presentation should be of significant interest to healthcare workers, Infection Prevention and Control Practitioners and Hospital Water Safety Groups including Hospital Estates, Engineers and FM providers. Architects and Consulting Engineers writing specifications for new-build and refurbishment healthcare projects should also benefit from better understanding of the realities of healthcare hand decontamination.

Format

An informal gathering over lunch at a venue of your choosing.

The discussion will specifically reference the following topics:

  • Healthcare advances since 1800
  • Antibiotics - discovery...and overuse
  • Driving resistance
  • The chain of infection
  • Barriers to handwashing
  • What can engineering do?
  • Summary / Q & A session
  • Duration: around 1-1.5 hours.

All participants receive a certificate of attendance.
