Construction Specialties (CS) contributed to the redevelopment of the Wellesley Ward at the Royal Hospital for Neuro-Disability (RHN), a charitable organisation working closely with the NHS. The refurbishment focused on a specialist inpatient ward for adults with sustained brain injuries who often exhibit challenging behaviour, forming part of RHN's £1.5 million fundraising appeal to modernise and elevate its standard of care.
Design goals
The project needed to ensure long-lasting protection for doors in high-traffic areas of the ward, where wheelchairs and hospital equipment created significant daily wear. Architects Floyd Slaski approached CS for a durable, low-maintenance solution that would protect doors while enhancing the ward's aesthetic. The specification needed to suit both single and double-door configurations, work with fire-rated doors, and protect both door faces and edges.
The solution
CS supplied a combination of Acrovyn door protection products, including curved push plates in a 'Rainbow' design, rectangular kick plates, and Door Edge Protectors (DEPs) sized for 54mm thick timber core doors. All were produced from 2mm thick impact-resistant Acrovyn Sheet in three colours - Golden Yellow, Anise, and Aqua Blue.
The DEPs were specified in three configurations to suit different door types: plain (DE-06), with an intumescent seal (DE-04), and with a brush-style fire/smoke seal (DE-05), making them compatible with FD30 and FD60 fire-rated doors as well as non-fire-rated doors across the refurbished area.
The outcome
The refurbished ward opened to patients in August 2023. The Acrovyn door protection specification delivered a hygienic, long-lasting solution that mitigates impact damage in high-traffic areas, while its colour scheme helped enhance the ward's overall interior design.
